TRICARE covers most inpatient and outpatient care that is medically necessary and considered proven. However, there are special rules or limits on certain types of care, while other types of care are not covered at all. This section provides details about services that TRICARE covers, limits and excludes.
Bras for Mastectomy
External surgical garments (specifically designed as an integral part of an external prosthesis) are considered medical supply items and are covered in lieu of reconstructive breast surgery.
Benefits are subject to two initial mastectomy bras and two replacement mastectomy bras per calendar year.
The benefits went on to state that if a women has had reconstructive breast surgery, breast prosthesis and mastectomy bras would not be covered.
TRICARE covers a mastectomy for patients at increased risk of developing breast cancer or if already diagnosed with breast cancer.
TRICARE does not cover subcutaneous mastectomy.
TRICARE covers external surgical garments (specifically designed as an integral part of an external prosthesis) in lieu of reconstructive breast surgery.
TRICARE covers cosmetic, reconstructive and plastic surgery to improve the physical appearance of a beneficiary only under the following circumstances:
To be covered, surgeries must be performed no later than December 31st of the year following the accidental injury or surgical trauma, except in the case of postmastectomy reconstructive breast surgery or cases involving children who may require a growth period.
